So have you looked at our plan? If you haven't, go here. We think the
only way to fix Auckland's problems once and for all is to make bold
sweeping changes to get rid of all the fat that exists in our local
government bodies.
We want as many people as possible to look at our plan and comment.
Make changes if you want. Pull it apart. Come up with something
better. But let's put the pressure on the government, and let's fix
Auckland.

Your submission is easy to read and it is good to see someone thinking outside the square. I believe it covers the governance of the region which will make Auckland more competitive on the international market while retaining the community imput in to the areas that most affect them. To the authors of your submission, congratulations.

2. Great plan
Yours is a great plan. Currently there is NO plan, other than the incumbents' desire to protect their positions. Postions often born of self-interest not altruism. The system needs massive overhaul to become much more efficient and effective in order to deliver cheaper services.

3. Site stagnation
NOTHING MUCH SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING ON THIS SITE. A PITY! - From site moderator: Have you looked at our (EMA) submission, which was recently made accessible from the home page of the site? The submission includes every one of the public's comments made on this site. Until the Commission reports on submissions we can't say much more. Thanks for your interest.
It's great that there is interest in this issue and some pragmatic thinking in solving the issues before us. However, I am amazed that a key issue such as health or well being doesn't feature in any of the diagrams. The part local authorities play in health and well being is tremendous but it is not mentioned as a key driver?
One area where there should be one body to organise everything is in transport - but - that is so long as the people in that body do not continue the idea that most routes need to go to and from the CBD of Auckland.
Much more transport is needed across Manukau, eg, from the airport to the city centre, from a number of areas to Manukau Tech. and to the Super Clinic in Manurewa, from, say Mangere Bridge to the City Centre and so forth.
Councils should be primarily interested in essential services, keeping the place clean and tidy and moral.
It’s not what councils were invented for - to build art centres, stadia and concert halls, etc. These should be the arena of private individuals and companies that wish to have such things. I am all for beautiful artwork that prevents graffiti but not modern-art blobs that cost a fortune and cannot be compared with traditional, cultural and truly artistic works that in the past were a result of great effort and talent and usually came as voluntary work or at little cost, if any, to the public.
If there was one great council the views of Manukau citizens and probably those of other outlying areas would be totally swallowed up by Auckland, Auckland, Auckland... The media now give much more attention to the mayor of Auckland than to the mayor of Manukau. Whenever it is said that amalgamation will save us money - it never seems to work out that way. Theoretically it should be true, but doesn't eventuate.
Example: someone decreed that the ARC rates should be collected separately. What happened? We now get multiple mounds of paper for each of the properties we own. Costs multiplying - postage, printing, paper and MY TIME! and we still get the Manukau accounts as well. I see absolutely NO advantage.
